The NAMA - Certified Parent Training Specialist-I, II (CAMS-I, CAMS-II) have been developed in response to the increased global call for accessible and effective parent training services and the accompanying need to provide training programs for mental health providers including professional counselors, chaplains, certified coaches, educators, social workers, psychotherapists, psychologists, pastors, social workers, psychiatrists, substance abuse and domestic violence counselors and other professionals working in community settings.
NAMA Certified Parent Training Specialist 40 hour training (12h live, including Supervision, 9h x 3 Modules self-study per The Parent Training Workbook & Curriculum) offers professionals, schools, hospitals, agencies, and organizations an opportunity to expand their services by including parent training programs.
CPTS-I (Certified Parent Training Specialist-I) - Parent Training Classes/Educational Services - Some participants are court-mandated to take classes as a condition of probation or court action. These are individuals who generally are not seeking traditional mental health services, but rather an educational approach. Their freedom and/or livelihood may depend on the completion of a recognized parent training program or classes. The Certified Parent Training Specialist-I Credential (see requirements below) is designed to fill this need.
CPTS-II (Certified Anger Parent Training Specialist-II) - Parenting Clinical Services - Some parent participants want a more rigorous approach to parenting. Parenting Clinical Services includes various clinical and evidence-based mental health approaches by a Certified Parent Training Specialist-II (see requirements below) a professional thoroughly trained to work with complex parenting issues. Parent Training professional services are not traditional psychotherapy or group counseling—rather it is a complex combination of insights from various psychological traditions that require additional training in parenting skills, concepts, and techniques.
Requirements for Parent Training Specialist-I Certification This certification requires a minimum of at least one of the following: peer support experience, a BA degree, community/volunteer service, and/or professional experience in the fields of mental or behavioral health. Certifies trained individuals to provide community parent training educational services including Parent Training Classes and Parent Training Educational Programs. This Certification is recognized by most courts in the United States.
1. Basic Anger Management Content Component
Completion of a Basic Parent Training Content program sponsored by or approved by NAMA. Approved programs include (at minimum) an overview of parenting issues, an understanding of the nature of parenting, parenting skills & concepts, utilization of parenting log and the role of trigger thoughts, and an understanding of brain functioning, cognitive distortion, the role of communication and assertiveness, the role of empathy, the role of stress, and the role of consequences.
2. Supervision Component
Completion of a minimum of 4 (30 minute) sessions of parent training supervision with a NAMA approved supervisor. This supervision can be part of a NAMA approved training or arranged by appointment in person, by telephone, or by teleconference.
3. Application Component
Complete Application (fee $125) and provide resume for NAMA Review.
Requirements for Anger Management Specialist-II Certification
This designation certifies individuals to provide clinical parent training counseling and professional services. This certification requires of ALL candidates complete a NAMA Authorized CPTS training course (see CPTS-I requirements above); PLUS
1. Requires a professional mental health state license, and professional liability insurance.
2. Application and Examination Component
Complete Application (process fee $150) and provide documentation of NAMA Authorized CPTS course completion. Upon review of completed Application you will receive CPTS-II and NAMA Member certificates.
